Biblical Blueprint for Pastoral Honor: Insights from Scriptures
By Rev Simon Ang, Moriah Assembly of God
The Bible has a blueprint for us to honor our pastors. What should we do so that there is a culture of honor in our churches? Rev Simon Ang examines and shares these insights from the Scriptures.
The Bible offers valuable insights into the importance of honoring pastors, and it offers guidance on how to build and sustain such a culture.
In today’s fast paced world where values and priorities often seem to shift rapidly, it is essential to establish a biblical blueprint for pastoral honor within the kingdom of God. This culture of honor should be particularly evident in how we treat our pastors and spiritual leaders. The Bible offers valuable insights into the importance of honoring pastors, and it offers guidance on how to build and sustain such a culture.
Recognizing the Spiritual Authority of Pastors
Hebrews 13:17 MSG states “Be responsive to your pastoral leaders. Listen to their counsel. They are alert to the condition of your lives and work under the strict supervision of God. Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its drudgery. Why would you want to make things harder for them?”
This verse emphasizes the authority pastors have in the spiritual lives of their members. Honoring pastors means recognizing their God given leadership roles and submitting to their guidance willingly.
Overwhelm pastors with expressions of gratitude, encouragement and love is a tangible way of honoring them.
Expressing Gratitude and Encouragement
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 MSG encourages believers to appreciate their spiritual leaders. “And now, friends, we ask you to honor those leaders who work so hard for you, who have been given the responsibility of urging and guiding you along in your obedience. Overwhelm them with appreciation and love!”

Praying for Pastors
Intercessory prayer is a powerful way to honor pastors. Ephesians 6:19-20 MSG instruct believers, “And don’t forget to pray for me. Pray that I’ll know what to say and have the courage to say it at the right time, telling the mystery to one and all, the Message that I, jailbird preacher that I am, am responsible for getting out.”
Regularly lifting pastors up in prayer demonstrates your commitment to their spiritual well-being and success of their ministry.
Avoiding gossip, criticism and divisive speech about pastors is crucial in maintaining a culture of honor within the church.
Avoiding Gossip and Criticism
Honoring pastors also involves guarding our speech. Ephesians 4:29 MSG reminds believers, “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.”

Serving with Humility
In Philippians 2:3-4 MSG, the apostle Paul advises, “Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”
Honoring pastors includes serving alongside them with humility, putting their needs and the needs of the church above personal ambitions.
Following their Godly Example
Hebrews 13:7 MSG encourages believers to emulate the faith of their spiritual leaders “Appreciate your pastoral leaders who gave you the Word of God. Take a good look at the way they live, and let their faithfulness instruct you, as well as their truthfulness.”
By following the godly example set by pastors, we honor their dedication to Christ and his teachings.
Providing Support
1 Timothy 5:17-18 underscores the importance of supporting pastors. “Give a bonus to leaders who do a good job, especially the ones who work hard at preaching and teaching.” Scripture tells us, “Don’t muzzle a working ox” and “A worker deserves his pay.”
Honoring pastors involves ensuring that they are adequately supported for their labor and dedication to the ministry. Churches can provide avenues for pastors to attend conferences, workshops and continuing education courses. These opportunities enable pastors to expand their knowledge, enhance their skills sets, and become more effective in their ministry.
Through recognizing their authority, expressing gratitude, intercessory prayer, guarding our speech, serving with humility, following their godly example and providing support, we can create an environment where pastors are respected, appreciated and empowered to lead effectively.
Building a culture of honoring pastors is not only a biblical mandate but also a vital aspect of maintaining a healthy and thriving church. Through recognizing their authority, expressing gratitude, intercessory prayer, guarding our speech, serving with humility, following their godly example and providing support, we can create an environment where pastors are respected, appreciated and empowered to lead effectively. In doing so we fulfill the biblical call to honor those who labor tirelessly to shepherd and guide us in our spiritual journey.
