Movement of Prayer: The Transformative Power of Prayer in Times of Crisis

By Ps Isaac Ngo, Eternal Life Assembly

How do we appropriate the power of prayer in times of crisis? Ps Isaac Ngo shares these teaching points and how God intervened in a personal crisis.

In life’s darkest and most uncertain moments, many of us often find ourselves grappling with fear, confusion, or despair. It is often in these times of crisis when we seek answers and comfort amidst the storm that prayer stands out as a beacon of hope—a powerful and transformative act that connects us to God’s wisdom, peace, and provision.

Prayer realigns our hearts with His will and infuses us with courage to face life’s trials. It is a declaration of our trust in God that goes beyond our circumstances.

Why Pray in a Crisis?

The Bible repeatedly calls us to turn to God in prayer, especially in challenging times. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

You see, prayer is not just a spiritual discipline; it is a divine lifeline. It shifts our perspective from the enormity of our problems to the greatness of our God.

When we pray, we acknowledge our dependence on God and invite Him to work in and through our situations. Prayer realigns our hearts with His will and infuses us with courage to face life’s trials. It is a declaration of our trust in God that goes beyond our circumstances.

Whether in calm or chaos, the essence of prayer remains the same: connecting with God and trusting in His care.

How to Pray Effectively During a Crisis

Prayer during a crisis doesn’t have to look different from prayer in everyday life. Whether in calm or chaos, the essence of prayer remains the same: connecting with God and trusting in His care. Jesus’ teaching on prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 provides a timeless guide:

  1. Begin with Worship: Start by acknowledging God’s greatness and sovereignty, declaring, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” This shifts your focus from the weight of your challenges to the power of the One who holds everything.
  2. Submit to His Will: In difficult moments, we may long for immediate solutions, but praying, “Your kingdom come, your will be done,” reminds us to trust in God’s perfect plan and timing, even when we don’t fully understand.
  3. Ask Boldly: Bring your requests before God. Whether it’s provision (“Give us today our daily bread”) or deliverance, for God cares about every detail of our lives.
  4. Seek Forgiveness and Grace: Reflect on your own heart and relationships. Crises often can also reveal areas where we need God’s refining work.
  5. Trust in His Protection: Pray for strength and the courage to persevere (“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”).

Through it all, I learned that prayer draws me closer to God, shaping my faith and sustaining me in the face of uncertainty.

Praying in a Crisis

Last year, my family faced a serious health crisis that became a profound lesson and reminder on the power of prayer. My father was hospitalised with a severe bacterial infection in his liver that left him in very critical condition. The doctors did not sugarcoat the seriousness of his condition, warning us that the outcome could be dire. Fear and uncertainty pressed in, but it was in those moments that we chose to turn to God in prayer.

During those two weeks, prayer became my way of declaring faith, mirroring the response of Daniel’s friends when faced with the fiery furnace: the God we serve is able to deliver us…, and he will deliver us… But even if he does not, (Daniel 3:17-18).

We prayed for my father’s healing, but more importantly, we surrendered to God’s will, trusting that His plans were higher than ours. Amidst the storm, we experienced an unexplainable peace. Though the outcome was uncertain, we felt God’s presence sustaining us. Thankfully, my father managed to pull through, the infection cleared up and my father eventually made a full recovery.

This experience reminded me that prayer is not about ensuring the outcome(s) I desire. It is about trusting in God’s sovereignty, knowing He is able to deliver and remains faithful, even if or when the answer is different from what I hope. Through it all, I learned that prayer draws me closer to God, shaping my faith and sustaining me in the face of uncertainty.

Turning to Prayer First

Many people know that prayer has power, yet it is not always our first response in a crisis. Why is this? Far too often, we rely on our own strength or search for quick fixes. But prayer invites us to step into God’s presence and align ourselves with His purposes.

You can learn to build a life anchored in prayer by making it a daily habit, so it becomes your natural response in challenging times. In moments of crisis, lean on the strength of community by praying with family, friends, or your church. Keep track of answered prayers as a heartfelt reminder of God’s faithfulness and goodness.

So, the next time life’s storms rage around you, let prayer be your anchor.

A Call to Seek God

Crises are inevitable, but they are also opportunities to grow deeper in faith and reliance on God. Prayer is not and should not be a last resort; it is the first and most powerful step we can take. Through prayer, we discover that God’s grace is sufficient, His peace is unshakable, and His love is unwavering.

So, the next time life’s storms rage around you, let prayer be your anchor. Trust that the God who calmed the seas and raised the dead is the same God who hears your cries and holds your future.
