Ministers’ Institute and Retreat (MIR) 2023 – Multiply, Multiply

By Rev Alvin Tay, Emmanuel Assembly of God

From November 20 to 23, our ministers and their families came together for equipping, fellowship, bonding and spiritual encounter with God.

The Ministers’ Institute and Retreat (MIR) 2023 was a significant event, marking its highly anticipated return after a four-year break. Embracing the compelling theme of “Multiply, Multiply,” this year’s retreat was not just a reunion but a platform for growth, learning, and spiritual rejuvenation. The event saw an impressive attendance, surpassing previous years, with over 190 participants including families, speakers and children.

For the first time in its history, MIR 2023 introduced a specialized Children’s program, a significant addition that catered to the younger attendees. This program was adeptly led by Ps Zane and Ps Ian from Peace Charis Assembly of God, offering engaging and age-appropriate spiritual content for children. This initiative not only enriched the experience of the young participants but also allowed parents to fully immerse themselves in the retreat’s other offerings.

Responding to the Lord at the altar

In a move towards digital innovation, the retreat also launched the MIR 2023 App. This application replaced traditional printed camp booklets, providing participants with a convenient, eco-friendly way to access important information, schedules, and links. Complementing this digital shift was the creation of a Telegram chat group for participants. This platform fostered a sense of community among attendees, enabling them to connect and organize various group activities such as Makan Foodies for food enthusiasts, Sports Activities for the active, Shopping Kakis for those interested in retail therapy, and Sightseeing Tours for exploring the surroundings.

The retreat’s program was rich and diverse, featuring Elective Sessions designed to equip participants with various skillsets. These sessions were conducted by speakers such as Rev Dr Isaiah Fadzlin, focusing on “Church and Evangelism in a Digital World,” Ps Jay Ong discussing “Discipling the Next Generation,” Rev Mark Poh on “Balancing Ministry and Personal Life,” Rev Alan Hewitt on “Building a Leadership Team and a Staff Team,” and Rev Timothy Yeung presenting “Discover your Unique Mission.” These sessions provided valuable insights and practical knowledge, catering to the diverse interests and needs of the attendees.

A notable event was the combined English and Mandarin Panel Discussion. The topic “The Pentecostal Identity and next generation” was explored under the facilitation of Rev Terence Ong. Panellists included Rev Dominic Yeo, Rev Ong Sek Leang, Rev Alan Hewitt, and Rev Timothy Yeung, offering a rich tapestry of perspectives and wisdom.

MIR 2023 was more than just a series of events and sessions. Each part of the program, whether it was orientation, meals, group photo taking, or free and easy time, was imbued with a sense of spiritual depth and community. Particularly impactful was the last night session, which featured an extended ministry time. Many participants experienced moments of spiritual encounter and awakening, reigniting their passion and commitment to the faith.

The retreat concluded with a powerful prophetic word from Rev Dominic Yeo, Chairman of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, and the General Superintendent of The Assemblies of God of Singapore. His message centred on the “MM33” mandate, a call to action for Assemblies of God Churches, emphasizing the importance of continued multiplication and outreach.

In essence, MIR 2023 was a transformative experience. It provided a platform for spiritual growth, community building, and skill development. The bonds of friendship and fellowship forged during the retreat are expected to endure, underpinned by the collective commitment to the mandate of “Multiply, Multiply.” This commitment, as emphasized throughout the event, is to be carried out not by might, not by power but by His Spirit.

Testimonies:

Gratus Aw, Eternal Life Assembly of God, Children’s Track

“I liked the children’s ministry program at the MIR 2023 because the teachers were friendly. The games were fun and exciting. The lessons helped me to love God more. In one of the sessions, the pastor in the children’s ministry prayed for me. I started to shiver, and I felt the Holy Spirit touching me. I felt touched by God. I hope there will be more children’s ministry programs in future MIRs.”

Gracia Aw, Eternal Life Assembly of God, Children’s Track

“I liked the children’s program because it was fun. I got to do fun activities.  If you finish the activities, you get to play ball, hop scotch, Lego and other fun things. The lessons taught me that it was important to  multiply the church so that more people can go to heaven. It makes me want to tell others about Jesus Christ. I really enjoyed myself at my first MIR.”

Bro Sebastian Chee, Zion Full Gospel Church, Chinese Track

“I attended the Chinese track at MIR. The messages through Rev Timothy Yeung were simple and reminded us of the most important thing to do – to lead souls to God. We were taught to enter into the presence of God daily and to do His will. Often in serving, I do find myself grumbling, but after attending MIR 2023, I felt very honoured to serve God in any way! All Glory to God”

Sis Dawn Ho, New Life Church, English Track

“My first MIR experience was a refreshing one. It was such a joy to worship together with other co-labourers who love and pursue the Lord wholeheartedly. I was also personally ministered to by the messages and received a call to return to my first love, the Lord Jesus. Appreciate everyone for making me feel welcome, and the committee for making all of this possible!”

Ps Jay Ong, Calvary Assembly of God, English Track

“As the sole representative from my church, coming for MIR was honestly slightly intimidating. Thankfully, the community of ministers made fellowshipping a cherished experience. Also as pastors of our respective congregations, it’s easy to be left running on empty. So praise be to God for the refreshing and re-firing services. Indeed, God is positioning us for Multiplication!”
