Prayer and Missions 2: How to Effectively Pray for Missionaries, Evangelists and Missions?
By Rev Matthew Tan, Jesus Heal Me (JHM Ministries)
We understand the power of prayers for our missionaries and missions that would support their work. Then, what are some areas we can effectively pray for? Rev Matthew Tan shares his teachings.
Praying for missions is an important aspect of supporting the work of missionaries and evangelists around the world. When we pray for missions, it is like artillery fire — we may not be on the ground with them, but we stand with them and our prayers have divine power to demolish strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).
Here are some areas which you can pray for missionaries and evangelists.
- Pray for their physical and emotional health: Missionaries and evangelists often work in challenging and sometimes dangerous environments, and it is important to pray for their protection and health. Pray for physical strength, and stamina as they carry out their work, as well as for emotional strength to cope with the issues they encounter.
- Pray for their relationships: Being a missionary or evangelist can be isolating, and it is important to pray for their relationships with family, friends, and fellow ministers. Pray for healthy and supportive relationships, and for opportunities to build community and fellowship with others.
- Pray for the people they are reaching: Pray for the hearts of the people the missionaries and evangelists are reaching, that they would be open to hearing the gospel and that the Holy Spirit would work in their hearts. You can pray for the specific needs of the communities who are being reached.
- Pray for their financial needs: Many missionaries and evangelists rely on financial support from churches and individuals, and it is important to pray for their financial needs to be met. Pray for God’s provision and for the generosity of others to support their work.
- Pray for their personal growth: As with all believers, missionaries and evangelists need to grow in their faith and relationship with God. Pray for their personal spiritual growth, that they would deepen their walk with the Lord, and that they would be encouraged and strengthened in their faith.
Here are some other areas you can pray for the work of missions.
- Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance: Ask God to guide workers in the missions field, to lead them to the right places, and to open doors for them to share the gospel and discipling new believers.
- Pray for unity and support: Pray that the workers in the missions field would be united in purpose and vision, and that they would have the support of the local churches and believers around the world.
- Pray for long-term impact: Pray that the missions work that we do will have a long-term impact on the communities we reach out to, and that many people would come to know Christ and be discipled.
