April 2TiP: Evangelism

By Ps Mervin Chia, Bethel Assembly of God

Learning the heart and tools of evangelism.

On April 9, our ministers gathered for a time of sharing on evangelism in continuation from March’s 2TiP. The session kicked off with a wonderful time of worship led by Ps Derek Foo and worship team from Elim Church. This was followed by a sharing by three para-church organizations to tell us about what they do, the methods and tools that they use to engage, and also to connect with our ministers so that we might capture anew, a heart of evangelizing, understand current trends and why and they work with certain groups, and also be resourced by material that were shared at the booths at intermission between training and the prayer session with the Alliance of Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches of Singapore.

Let the presence of God fill this place.

Bro Steven Say from One for Jesus began with sharing that their vision is for every Christian in Singapore to be committed to bring at least 1 pre-believer to Christ within 10 years. One for Jesus sees its oneness as a collective and cohesive effort with the whole body of Christ to evangelize the nation, for the One, our Lord Jesus, as well as for the one soul. Steven shared that one of the ways that they share is a conversational method through storytelling that segues into the Gospel. Another tool they use is with a Cantonese movie ‘The Source of Love’ filmed in Hong Kong, along with a paper-cut illustration on eternity, The Cross, the Light of the World. Another means they curated is via social media (https://www.instagram.com/oneforjesus.sg/). Their outreach to the marketplace is through networking leaders in various fields, and one of the projects they are working on a digital database to resource the Christian community on spaces that they can gather to conduct meetings for evangelism and bible studies, as well as coaching for evangelism. Bro Steven, who works with Jason Wong on Elijah 7000, works with families, especially fathers in prisons where they reach  inmates by way of education.

Having interesting discussions among our ministers.

Bro David from CRU shared that they reach the campus from the angle of purpose. David highlights that all forms of evangelism are relational in nature. CRU has rebranded ‘the Four’, bridging personal testimonies of how God has been real to them through testimonies and how God makes intellectual sense. They also have developed an application that helps with sharing the Gospel in various languages, and with apologetics. Cru also equips how we can be better conversationalists, listening, and asking the right questions and being vulnerable. CRU emphasizes that evangelism is Spirit-filled call and work, and we must be spirit-filled to fulfill this God-given mandate.

Bro David called upon his co-worker Bro Terrence to share what CRU has been doing on the campuses. One hurdle they discover to sharing the Gospel is often fear, but at the same time the key ingredient among this age profile is transparency, therefore the cardgame, ‘Conversations With’ facilitates that process, allowing their conversations to gear towards talking about faith authentically at three different levels of depth. Another tool they employ is ‘Finding your purpose’. It is a life-coaching tool that takes them through a journey of discovery within secular spaces, where schools have opened their doors to.

Our guest speaker sharing on the topic of evangelism.

Bro Alvin from Singapore Youth for Christ shared that the people he mainly reaches are from ITEs though they are also in Polytechnics, JC, SOTA and LaSalle, secondary schools. Their mission is to reach the unseen and unheard in the campuses, with the Faith, Love and Hope tool which they have at their booth. Bro Alvin’s sharing reiterates what OFJ and CRU mentioned, the need for relationality through friendship. Bro Alvin called upon Bro Joshua to share the conservational tools that they use such as the Faith, Love and Hope which has enabled them to engage with the youth and share the Gospel with them.

As the session ended, one truth resounded clearly above every testimony, tool, and technique shared: evangelism is not the mandate of a single ministry, a single method, or a single generation — it is the heartbeat of the whole Body of Christ. The Spirit is indeed moving across Singapore, weaving together a tapestry of witness that no one ministry could weave alone. What One for Jesus, CRU, and Singapore Youth for Christ reminds us of is profoundly simple yet deeply convicting — every Christian is called, every conversation is sacred.  From Gathering to Going. Let us be ministers who no longer see evangelism as a programme to execute, but as a posture to embody — relational, Spirit-filled, transparent, and bold.

Let us be fathers, mothers, shepherds, and friends who listen well, ask the right questions, and step vulnerably into the sacred ground of another’s story, trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do. The field is not someone else’s assignment; they are ours, together.

Praying together to uplift one another.
