New Horizon Church’s Evangelism Workshop

By Lily Tan, New Horizon Church

A full-day workshop equipping members to reach the lost.

One of the five key emphases of New Horizon Church is being missional. This call to live missionally is often highlighted from the pulpit to remind members to be intentional in reaching others for Christ.

To help members see the lost through the eyes and heart of God, and to equip them to share the gospel effectively, a full-day Evangelism Workshop was held on April 18, 2026, conducted by Dr Richard Ong, Assistant Director at the Center for Servant Leaders, Singapore Bible College.

A total of 42 adults and youths – including pastors, ministry leaders, workers and a few members from other churches – gathered for the workshop. Through Scripture, videos and personal anecdotes, Dr Ong covered three key components during the workshop.

Learning together on reaching the lost.

1. The Forgotten Art of Evangelism

Participants were reminded of the Great Commission. Lost people matter to God and the Church is called to reach them. Dr Ong impressed upon participants that evangelism is not merely the responsibility of the church’s Evangelism Department, but of every believer and ministry.

In one video portraying the Church of God as a ship, the words of evangelist Reinhard Bonnke served as a sobering reminder:

“The Church of Jesus Christ is not a pleasure boat but a lifeboat for saving souls, and every hand is needed on deck.”

Trainer, Dr Richard Ong, Assistant Director at the Center for Servant Leaders, Singapore Bible College.

2. Practising Evangelism

Through videos and personal testimonies, Dr Ong demonstrated how evangelism can take place both in the community and among friends and loved ones. He emphasized the importance of intentionality – setting aside time to engage with people and building genuine friendships with those who do not yet know Christ.

3. Handling Questions Asked by Non-Christians

The final segment provided practical guidelines on communicating with non-Christians, including addressing common questions and comments they may raise. Participants learned how to respond with greater sensitivity, wisdom and preparedness when engaging people of different beliefs and backgrounds.

Practicing what was learned.

Takeaways from the Workshop

“What I found useful was the 3-points summary that would help me focus on keeping my personal testimony simple, precise and relevant during witnessing. The 3 points are: Life before Christ, How I came to Christ, and Life after Christ.” – Louis Chan, retiree

“It was insightful. Before the workshop, I was lost on how and when to evangelize. After the workshop, I learned the right steps to take. The John 3:16 diagram showed me how easy it can be to explain Christianity and salvation to others. I was also reminded to rely on God and the Holy Spirit to guide me on who and when to evangelize, and to pray for opportunities to share the gospel.” – John Chan, Polytechnic student

“An enriching workshop that provides practical applications and addresses common questions. It has equipped me to be more effective in evangelism.” – Christina Tan, Executive Assistant

The Evangelism Workshop was both empowering and a timely reminder of the Church’s call to reach the lost. We are grateful to Dr Richard Ong for his teaching and for inspiring us to see that we can reach the lost when we share God’s heart for people, are willing to be equipped, and take the time to reach out to them. Above all, we are reminded to pray continually and depend on the Holy Spirit in this work.

For all who have COME to Jesus, He now calls us to GO and make disciples. It is time for all hands to be on deck to carry out this mission. If not now, when?

Our Senior Pastor, Rev Joshua Lye, presenting a token of appreciation to Dr Ong.
