Commencing the workshop by coming together to worship God.

AG Chinese Ministry Network: Reframes the Narrative

“Sunset Ministry”? An AG Chinese Ministry Network NextGen and Worship Workshop that changes our perspective.

For years, Chinese-speaking ministries in Singapore have carried a quiet but persistent label: a “sunset ministry.” But is that label truly deserved?

On 22 and 23 May 2026, the Assemblies of God Chinese churches across Singapore gathered for a NextGen workshop, a Revival Night, and a Worship workshop. The sessions were hosted by the Elisha Ministry Team (以利沙团), the Chinese youth leadership ministry of the Assemblies of God, Malaysia.

Many came hoping to discover how to sustain NextGen and Worship ministries amid limited manpower and scarce resources. Yet what the team offered was not merely a set of practical strategies, but an invitation to reframe the narrative itself.

Rev Philip Koon, Director of the AG Malaysia Chinese Language Division, opened the NextGen workshop with a piercing question: “Has the church unknowingly been losing our children spiritually despite our upgraded church buildings, programs, and budgets?” The answer he proposed turned out to be far from the suggestions of better worship sets or more exciting curriculums. Rather, it was a return to authentic witness, intentional mentoring, and the courage to help the younger generation discover and answer their call. Beyond “what should we do,” the deeper questions linger: Do we understand where we stand? Are we shaping programs or lives? Dare we move from control to spiritual covering?

That same night at the Revival Night, Rev Philip exhorted weary leaders to keep their hearts burning for God. True perseverance, he reminded, is not grim endurance or sheer willpower. It is being gripped by God’s love. Rekindling does not come through added pressure, but through fresh encounters with the Lord, prayer, the Word, and a godly community.

Rev Christal Lee, Secretary of the AG Malaysia Chinese Language Division and a core member of the Elisha team, closed the two days with a worship workshop. She pointed everyone back to the sacred call: worship is not an opening act before the sermon, but the altar where God meets His people. She issued a pressing invitation to return to a priestly calling and to enter deep waters with the Spirit. She urged us to consider not just “how do we lead better,” but “are we ready to carry His glory?”

Maybe the sunset narrative is not a verdict but a question. As Rev Philip puts it: “Power can be imitated, but fire cannot.” The real issue for Chinese churches desiring revival is this: What fuels our ministries today? Perhaps it is time to dream beyond limitations of manpower, language, and resources, to a God-sized vision. The call on Chinese ministries in Singapore remains. God is ready. Are we?

During the workshop, participants experienced God’s power and a deep sense of unity.
